The Sims has officially revealed that the base game for the fourth installment will be free-to-play on October 18, 2022.
The news comes alongside the developers’ announcement of an upcoming same-day stream that promises even more updates and behind-the-scenes details. Fans of the series can tune in to The Sims’ YouTube and Twitch channels at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time.
According to the Twitter account, The Sims 4 will be available for free on both PC and consoles:
Long time fans of The Sims 4 weren’t too happy to hear that the expensive game would be free next month. Many players ended up requesting refunds with equal parts jest and frustration.
While this feels very understandable, none of the extra content will be made available. And besides, the original game was released as far back as 2014, so several years have passed.
There have been more than a few games that moved over to Game Pass, or became free to play, much sooner than that. Apart from smaller games like Autumn guyseven huge titles like Fate made the controversial move.
In fact, some fans noted that establishing a base game and choosing what DLC to fill it with might be a superior business model for the series anyway. To soften the blow, the developers are also offering current owners of the base game one Desert Luxe Kit inspired by southwestern deserts, redeemable until October 17, 2022.
The Sims may not have a monopoly on its genre, but it certainly excels at it and has retained a very large fan base. Since the base game will be available on the same day as the October stream, it will be interesting to see how much the “updates” flesh out the future of the franchise.
