Final Fantasy XIV is probably one of the most beloved games in the series. The game was initially launched in 2010 on PC and PlayStation 4. It was later launched on PlayStation 5 in 2021. Meanwhile, Xbox users also demanded the game on the platform.
At the XO19 event, Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced that they are trying to bring the game to Xbox, but there are small complications that are causing the delay. After 2019, we didn’t hear anything about the game and most expected the idea to be shelved by now.
Three years later, Phil Spencer was asked about the announcement they made in 2019, to which he replied:
'We certainly announced that (laughs). Naturally, we haven’t given up yet. This is a commitment from both Microsoft and Square Enix to gamers and we will continue to coordinate our efforts.'
Square Enix was asked three years ago about the reason for the delay. The Xbox platform’s limitations on specific cross-play features, such as talking and creating groups with players on other platforms, caused a delay in the game’s release. In a recent Wccftech interview Square Enix’s Naoki Yoshida stated:
To play an MMORPG [on Xbox], there are 2 regulations for Microsoft which stand in the way of making crossplay feasible. Unless these regulations are rejected, there is no meaning.'
Microsoft has certain mandates that make the game’s launch pointless for Square Enix on Xbox. First, cross-platform players cannot have chats. Second, you can’t form guilds with other platformers, which is technically the purpose of an MMORPG.
SE further stated that this can only be resolved if Microsoft changes their policies. Spencer’s recent comments have really breathed new life into Final Fantasy XIV fans on Xbox. We really hope that after this comment Xbox finally does something solid and doesn’t go on another 3 year hiatus.
Do you think Microsoft will change their policy and finally bring FFXIV to Xbox? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
