Cyberpunk 2077 gets massive player count surge likely thanks to Netflix anime adaptation – Effinate Games

Despite the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077 back in late 2020, the game managed a large fanbase, leading to an average player count of over 10,000 on Steam alone over the nearly two years since launch.

But now Cyberpunk 2077 sees players tally heights not seen since launch. According to Steam diagrams at the time of writing the game has over 65,000 players online with a 24 hour peak of over 78,000. In the past few days, the now somewhat older game has had a massive resurgence of 5 to 6 times.

While the game recently released its 1.5 update, it’s unlikely that the update could be accredited, as previous updates to fix a launch mess of the title didn’t get much attention.

The same can be said about the future Phantom Liberty expansion which was announced 2 weeks ago. And while the player count increased back then, it’s nowhere near the numbers we’re seeing right now.

So therefore it appears that this large increase may actually be the result of Cyberpunk Edgerunners, the Netflix animated series created by Studio Trigger, which aired a week ago. The new anime seems to have been quite successful, although it also helps that the game is also currently 50% off on Steam as of this writing.

Cyberpunk 2077 is now available for Windows PC (via Epic games, GOOand Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Google Stadia. If you missed it, you can find our in-depth review of the original game here and our port report for its next-gen versions here.
