Japanese developer Mebius announced a Switch port for Steel empiretheir 90s steampunk shoot ’em up game.

Steel empire will get a Switch port sometime in 2023 – news confirmed at Tokyo Game Show 2022.

The steampunk shmup was originally released for the Sega Genesis in 1992 for Japan, and a remake was later released for the 3DS and then ported to PC (via Steam).

Here is an overview of Steel Empire:

Steel Empire is a steam punk shoot’em up game that features a frantic battle filled with powerful enemies and crazy obstacles. Enjoy a beautiful world and retro gameplay as you dodge and shoot your way through classic stages. Choose one of 4 difficulty levels according to your skills and fight the evil empire! See how well you did using Replay Mode and prove your worth by getting all achievements.

Originally released on the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive consoles in 1992, it was later ported to the Nintendo Game Boy Advance in 2004 and to the Nintendo 3DS in 2014, and now it’s coming to PC!

Choose to fly one of two classes of fighter: the Etopirica (ET-02R), a small and fast aircraft, or the Zappellon, a slower but more resilient zeppelin. You only fly in one direction, but you can shoot from the back as well as the front. Levels are divided into a few stages that must be completed, each with their own boss, before moving on to the next level. After a level is completed, you can change your craft, watch a replay, continue the game in your current craft, or save your progress.

During the game there is a certain number of lives and continues at your disposal. Once the health bar is depleted, a life is lost with play continuing normally. If all lives are used, you can press a continue, which will restart at either the beginning or midpoint of a stage, depending on how far along you were. When all continues are used, the game is over.

To increase your firepower, collect powerups such as experience points, health, bombs or other lives.
